Sustainability at a Glance
Through our products, services, and activities, we will continue to contribute to the realization of environmentally-friendly and sustainable society. Here are some figures showing the various efforts and achievements we are making to recycle the earth's resources and reduce waste, with the aim of a better relationship with nature.

2020: The amount of collection for only six months due to the change in fiscal year end. Other years are on a fiscal year basis.
In Japan, only about 30% of clothing that is no longer needed because it is worn out or no longer fits, is reused or recycled. The remaining 70% is disposed of as garbage, amounting to about 500,000 tons every year*. MUJI collects unwanted clothes in stores to recycle global resources and reduce waste. Since 2010, we have been collecting used clothes to be upcycled as new clothes or recycled as raw materials. We collected and recycled 49.1 tons of textile products in the fiscal year ended August 2022. From "Sustainable Fashion", Ministry of the Environment (in Japanese)

This is an initiative to recycle items that have been used by customers for many years, or items that cannot be sold as a result of a glitch during the manufacturing and distribution process. The clothes are re-dyed with indigo color and given whole new value. Sales of these clothes began at MUJI Tenjin-Daimyo which opened in March 2015. As of August 31, 2022, they are available at 18 stores in Japan.

Traditionally in Japan, cloth and clothes are patched and re-enforced (stitching or Sashiko technique) so that they can be used for a long period of time. Carrying over the wisdom of our ancestors, we re-dye collected clothes to give them a new life which hopefully lead us and our customers to think about using our clothes carefully.
Amount of plastic bottles collected
1130kg(FY 2022)
We are conducting "PET item collection and recycling" as part of our efforts to reduce plastic waste. Used facial lotion/milk bottles, as well as "My Bottle for Water", are collected at stores and recycled into polyester raw materials to reduce plastic waste and make efficient use of petroleum-based raw materials.

As part of our efforts to reduce plastic waste, we have installed water refilling stations in MUJI stores. This is a water supply service using tap water that is available free of charge to anyone who brings a "My Bottle for Water" or other bottles.

Now that reducing plastic waste has become an urgent issue, what can we do? Refilling our own water bottle instead of buying and throwing away plastic bottles is one solution. The first step is to reduce the number of empty plastic bottles, even just one bottle a day. As a first step toward a sustainable society, we propose the idea "to fill up your own water bottle", and we installed water refilling stations at our stores for customers to use freely.
Number of stores that collect food for Food Drive
79Stores(FY 2022)
In order to reduce food loss, we have started "food drive" activity in cooperation with local governments of each region. This is an initiative to collect foods (canned food, pouched food, dried food, dried noodles, beverages, condiments/seasonings, etc.) whose expiration dates are close, and to provide them to local welfare groups and facilities through food bank organizations. The program started at MUJI Tokyo Ariake, which opened in December 2020. In FY2022, the number of collection bases expanded to 79 stores.

In order to reduce the amount of waste, we no longer provide plastic shopping bags and offer paper bags instead. At the same time, we have expanded the line-up of re-usable shopping bags and encourage customers to bring their own shopping bags.
Also, large-sized shared-shopping bags (Polypropylene Bag) useful for bulk purchase and big-size items, are available with deposit of 150 yen.
