Respect for the Environment
The Ryohin Keikaku Group has been promoting environmentally responsible manufacturing practices by utilizing appropriate materials. We recognize the close relationship between our business activities and the global environment and believe that reducing the burden on the natural environment and its living beings is a critical issue. We develop products that utilize a wide range of raw materials from around the world, and are committed to addressing procurement challenges responsibly with the aim of achieving sustainable sourcing of raw materials.
We understand the importance of halting and reversing the loss of biodiversity to put nature on a recovery track, and as such support the Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). The Group will minimize the impact of its business activities on ecosystems and promote biodiversity conservation. We will also identify the impacts of natural capital-related risks and opportunities on our business, advance strategy development and implementation, and enhance disclosure in line with the TNFD framework.
We aim to eliminate deforestation caused by resource extraction from designated protected areas under the law. We aim to use sustainably sourced materials for all products that use palm oil, timber and cotton sold domestically by 2050. Our wool and down raw materials are sourced with consideration for animal welfare.
The Ryohin Keikaku Group systematically conducts and facilitates environmental management.
Environmental Management SystemBased on its environmental policy, the Ryohin Keikaku Group has established an environmental due diligence framework and works to identify, assess, prevent and mitigate any negative environmental impact throughout the entire supply chain.
Environmental Due DilligenceAt Ryohin Keikaku, we define materials with ethical significance—taking into account the impact on the global environment, animal welfare, producers and local communities—as environmentally responsible materials. By actively selecting and increasing the procurement of such materials, we aim to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society while achieving circularity and coexisting with nature.
Procurement of Raw MaterialsAt Ryohin Keikaku, we want children to experience the warmth of wood and develop an appreciation for its importance and appeal. Some of our stores have wood-themed play areas where parents and children can play together while shopping, and also host events related to wood education.
Activities at StoresRyohin Keikaku supports activities to protect endangered species. We have been selling printed t-shirts depicting animals at risk of extinction, and we donate a portion of the proceeds to Japan Committee for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN-J). We hope that wearing the t-shirts will encourage children to become interested in activities to protect the animals they depict, while also developing an interest in the reason these animals are endangered. In addition, it is possible to donate to IUCN-J through MUJI’s online store and the mobile app.
